Soak the seeds in water for 24 h, then sow directly in the garden after the last frosts, so that a plant or two remains every 30 cm after thinning, or sow indoors 5 weeks earlier, in multi-cells (50) and transplant every 30 cm after the last frosts.<\/p>\n

Why drain your humus soil when you can grow 'Hayayuki' rice in it? Rice yields are much higher than wheat yields, and frankly, it's not that difficult to grow rice up to zone 4b in Quebec.... This cultivar from northern Japan traditionally grows in a flooded plot, but we only watered it when we could, say 3 x a week... the main thing is to make sure it doesn't run out of water until mid-July. After that, you can slow down the frequency of watering. We've had better results with transplants, but it's also possible to direct seed. It takes about 120 days (in Kamouraska... we're talking about 105 days in Maine and 97 days in Indiana) to reach grain maturity from planting, which corresponds to the term \"hayayuki\", or the first snowfall of the season. The grain is short, brown and very tasty. 60-90 cm.<\/p>\n
