clary sage
$4.75 - $26.00Price range: $4.75 through $26.00
Salvia sclarea, Lamiaceae
toute-bonne, clary sage
This large, beautiful cousin of sage has large, pleasantly hairy, fleshy leaves with serrated edges. Its fragrance is very refreshing, citrus-like, slightly resinous and penetrating like musk. From its second year, it produces long, branching flower spikes up to 1 m 20 long. The flowers have pale purplish-blue and white petals, sheathed in large, highly decorative bracts.
It thrives in full sun or part shade, in soil that drains well, even dry soil. We often read that it's a biennial plant, but like angelica, it's actually a short-lived perennial. If we prevent these two plants from producing seeds after flowering, we'll improve their lifespan, otherwise they'll disappear after reseeding abundantly.

There's no need to sow indoors, as this sage will only flower in its second year... Sow directly in the garden in May or June, pressing the seeds onto the surface of the soil: the seeds must be able to detect light in order to germinate, so don't bury them. Germination takes place at around 18°C and generally lasts 3 weeks. After thinning, leave 40 to 50 cm between plants in the garden.
