butternut squash Canada Crookneck
$4.50
Cucurbita moschata, Cucurbitaceae
The 'Canada Crookneck' butternut squash is a very old variety that originated as the Butternut type. Its light-yellow, thin-skinned fruit has a twisted neck if left to crawl on the ground. Commercially introduced to the U.S. in 1834, it has been praised ever since for its resistance to drought and predators, as well as for the quality of its sweet, fine-grained orange flesh. The Iroquois people cultivated a similar squash in Quebec. Rather early: 100 to 110 days to maturity from direct sowing.
