Apios americana, Fabaceae

sweet potato, tuberous wisteria, groundnut

The hopniss potato vines haunted the family garden, wrapping themselves around everything they could find, including the ferns that shared its damp habitat... We now prefer to give it a more solid vertical support and keep it in place. Apios is like a sweet-tasting potato from the pea family, which can be left alone or harvested annually. There's always some left over...

10 tubers

Expedited shipment in April-May 2025, then available in stores. Available in Quebec and Canada only.

Out of stock

To prevent the tubers from freezing, we cannot ship them during the winter. However, they are available for pickup at our store during the winter. Plant the apios in April-May or October and store the tubers in the refrigerator until planting.

They should be planted like a potato, one tuber at a time, about 4 inches deep.
At every foot, if the plant is growing on a high trellis. Every 3 feet if the plant is allowed to curl up on itself on the ground.

It is a very cold-hardy plant. Harvesting is good from the 2nd year onwards. It is advisable to peel the tubers to avoid ingesting the indigestible coating... always eat a new food in small portions to start with.
